I Never Cared About Halsey. Then She Left Me Speechless.

“The Girl in the Tower” made me realize I seriously underestimated how good Halsey is live.

I’ll be honest, I was never a huge Halsey listener. She was one of those artists I knew, heard on the radio, and respected but I never really stopped and thought, damn, she can PERFORM.

What surprised me most wasn't even the giant production. It was Halsey herself.

Her voice has so much more power live than I expected. There’s grit, control, emotion, and this almost angry edge that makes the songs hit completely differently. She isn't standing there trying to sound perfect. She sounds alive. When she pushes her voice, you can actually feel the emotion behind it.

And then there's the stage presence.

She doesn't just sing a song and wait for the next one. Every movement feels intentional. The way she moves, looks at the crowd, hits certain moments and completely throws herself into the performance makes it feel bigger than a concert. It feels like she's telling you a story and daring you to look away.

That might be why this performance finally made everything click for me.

Songs I probably wouldn't have paid much attention to before suddenly felt completely different live. Nightmare, Castle, Experiment on Me, Gasoline, Lonely Is the Muse the set leans into the darker, louder side of Halsey, and honestly, that's where she seems most comfortable. The current Girl in the Tower shows have been built around that theatrical, intense side of her, with a set that moves through different chapters and brings back songs from across her catalog.

And apparently I'm not the only one who sees it.

Fans have been describing the show as performance art, while others keep pointing out her intensity, energy and vulnerability onstage.

But here's my criticism: sometimes there is a lot happening. The visuals, outfits, staging and drama can compete with the actual music. If you're watching everything at once, it's easy to miss just how good the vocals are.

And that's almost the biggest surprise for me.

Strip away the tower. Strip away the chains. Strip away the giant production.

There is a damn good singer standing in the middle of all of it.

I went into this as someone who never really cared about Halsey.

I came out thinking:

“Wait… have I been sleeping on her this whole time?”

Maybe you don't fall in love with an artist because of their biggest song.

Sometimes you just have to see them live to finally understand why everyone else already gets it.ady gets it.
